GROUP THERAPY FOR TEENS in Arnprior & West Carleton
bi-weekly course for Adolescence.
1 hour sessions starting at 4. A basic summary of the 10 week course for Adolescence. See format below. There will be a minimum of 8 in the group to allow everyone time to share.
This course will be based on the cognitive-behavioral treatment program that has been developed for adolescence suffering depression, anxiety, self-esteem issues and lack of skills relating to group integration. The treatment will be conducted with groups of four to eight participants who are 16 to 18 years of age, and the vehicle for therapy is a class entitled the “Adolescent Coping with life Course.” During the 10 1-hour sessions, the adolescents learn essential skills for overcoming depression and self-esteem issues related to anxiety. The areas covered are relaxation, pleasant events, irrational and negative thoughts, social skills, communication, and problem solving. Several different methods of instruction are employed: lectures by the group leader, discussions, role-playing exercises, and homework assignments. Research on the efficacy of the treatment program has demonstrated that more than 70% of the adolescents who have participated in the course are significantly improved one month after termination, and that these gains are maintained up to 12 months after treatment. Depression, anxiety and self-esteem are debilitating disorders that seriously affects the lives of hundreds of thousands of teenagers in Canada. Bouts of clinical depression also place the adolescent at risk for a number of associated problems such as academic difficulties and suicide. In addition, social withdrawal and the other obstacles to social functioning that often accompany the disorders have a dramatic impact on many aspects of the adolescent's life at a critical time in his or her development.
